One of, if not, the most competitive events in the world, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race covers "over 1,150 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer” along the Iditarod Trail, a National Historic Trail. Called the “Last Great Race on Earth,” the race route is alternated every other year, one year going north through Cripple, Ruby and Galena, the next year south through Iditarod, Shageluk, and Anvik. The 2009 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race will start March 7 in downtown Anchorage. more

Presented by the Greater Wasilla Chamber of Commerce, the Mat-Su King Salmon Derby is an annual fishing event that includes all legal waters in the Susitna River Drainages and the Knik Arm Drainage’s Eklutna Tailrace and the Little Susitna River. Prizes are awarded for the heaviest King Salmon entered each week. more
