Located eight miles southeast of Newellton in Tensas Parish, the Winter Quarters State Historic Site is an amazing structure that survived the ravaging of the Civil War. Built as a three-room winter hunting lodge, the home was purchased in 1850 by Dr. Nutt and his family, who also owned the Longwood Plantation in Natchez, Mississippi. Rooms and cotton were added making the plantation at one time more than 2,000 acres with cotton gins, a hospital, smokehouse, sawmill, milkhouse, and more. You can now visit the home with its many period furniture pieces, including a preserved circa 1845 billiard table, copies of diaries, and other personal records.
