Winter Quarters State Historic Site (circa 1805) 4929 Highway 608, Newellton, LA 71357, Located 28 Miles Southwest, 318-467-9750, Located eight miles southeast of Newellton in Tensas Parish, the Winter Quarters State Historic Site is an amazing structure that survived the ravaging of the Civil War. Built as a three-room winter hunting lodge, the home was purchased in 1850 by Dr. Nutt and his family, who also owned the Longwood Plantation in Natchez, Mississippi. Rooms and cotton were added making the plantation at one time more than 2,000 acres with cotton gins, a hospital, smokehouse, sawmill, milkhouse, and more. Vicksburg National Military Park Clay Street @ I-20, Exit 4, Vicksburg, MS 39183, 601-636-0583 ext. 8023, The park was established by Congress in 1899, to commemorate one of the most decisive battles of the American Civil War, the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg. It includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles of reconstructed trenches and earthworks, a 16 mile tour road, antebellum home, 144 emplaced cannons, the restored Union gunboat-USS Cairo, and the Vicksburg National Cemetery. The tour begins in the Visitor Center where you can see exhibits and artifacts from the Seige of Vicksburg and an 18-minute film. Although much can be enjoyed with a self-guided tour, we heartily recommend hiring one of the licensed professional park guides to ride with you. They share so many great stories and interesting facts of the war you will certainly have a greater appreciation and understanding of this important time in our history.
